All Arizona voters are encouraged to learn more about the powerful Arizona Corporation Commission, often described as a Fourth Branch of Government.

Participation couldn’t be easier. You can engage in person at Rio Salado College in Tempe, logon to the real-time and the on-demand webcasts, tune in to Cox Cable and other cable and broadcast media after the debates, propose debate questions on this web site, and discuss issues online.

This year you will vote for three of the five Corporation Commissioners.

These five people will make important decisions that  will affect residential consumers,  the elderly, low income families, large and small businesses, schools, governments and nonprofit organizations, utility companies and investors

About The Corporation Commission

The Arizona Corporation Commission sets the rates you pay for public utilities including telecommunications, water, electric, and natural gas services. Commission policies also determine the quality of these services and future utility infrastructure investments, including high speed Internet to rural communities and solar, nuclear, and other alternative energy sources. In addition to Utilities Regulation, other services under the jurisdiction of the Commission include Consumer Protection and Corporations and Securities Oversight, and Railroad and Pipeline Safety

More About The Commission

There are 5 members of the Commission elected by the public to a four-year term. This year you will have the opportunity to vote for three of the five  Commissioners. There are 3 Republican and 3 Democratic  candidates for 3 seats on the Commission.

In most states the Commission is known as the Public Service Commission or the Public Utility Commission. In Arizona the Commission has responsibilities that go beyond traditional public utilities regulation.

The Commission:

  • Regulates public utilities impacting utility rates, infrastructure investment, and the availability and quality of telecommunications, water, electric and natural gas services

  • Sets rates and applications for Arizona's Universal Service Funds

  • Grants corporate status, maintains corporate records, and monitors the integrity of  businesses and organizations doing  business in Arizona

  • Insures the integrity of the securities marketplace, regulates brokers, and  protects buyers of stocks, bonds and other securities from investment scams and fraud

  • Protects public safety by monitoring railroads and the integrity of the pipelines that carry gasoline and oil across the state
